Along the Atlantic coast, concrete giants once forged by fascists to keep Europe under their reign, are now slowly reclaimed by sand and sea. Silent witnesses, the cruelties of war and occupation etched into their DNA, they now stand testimony of contemporary life. In between them an enduring interplay of harm and protection unravels.

Echoing the still used Nazi propaganda term “Fortress Europe” the Atlantic Wall serves as reminders of war, while also testifying to the liberation of Europe from fascism - a cause that remains utterly vital today. Eternal concrete structures encounter an ever changing landscape, memorials of war are opposed to practical everyday use. How do we treat remains of conflict, how should we? Memento Muri is a journey without definite answers, but the start of an archive of what can be done.
